“‘Sugar Hives’ shows an endearing but troubled side to Love, reflecting on the past and looking to the future.” – Wonderland
Today, Wonderland premieres the video for Calvin Love’s “Sugar Hives,” a track from his freshly released EP ‘Ecdysis’ (Modern Sky USA). The video was directed by Laura-Lynn Petrick, who previously worked with Weyes Blood, Allah-Las, Nick Waterhouse, and more.
“As a non-drinker, I am overcoming the isolation, struggle and disconnect that’s a part of being a musician,” Love told The FADER, “Demons still follow me today after quitting alcohol seven years ago. What once started as my weekend ambition, quickly became a daily problem. I have the utmost respect for those who can keep their drinking in check, but that’s something I couldn’t do. So, I wrote a song about it, and leave it to my music to be my only escape.”
A veteran of the same Edmonton scene that birthed other oddball indie rockers like Mac DeMarco and Alex Calder, Calvin Love is setting off to Los Angeles to perform a 4 dates residency at Bootleg Theater in May.
Blending gritty exploration and an effortlessly cool croon, Love is a dreary rebel of David Lynch or Jim Jarmusch’s making, who reels you in through wistful verse, entrancing rhythms and weighty synthesized pleas.
